The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has highlighted how the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste (NFSC) Students Scheme is helping scholars from economically weaker backgrounds pursue higher education. The ministry shared the case of Babli, a 32-year-old researcher from South East Delhi, whose academic journey was transformed by financial support under the scheme.
What the scheme provided
Babli comes from a lower-middle-income family and faced significant financial obstacles while attempting to pursue doctoral research. Starting from January 2021, she received assistance totalling approximately Rs. 25 lakh under the NFSC Scheme. This support package included fellowship payments, House Rent Allowance and contingency grants.
The financial assistance addressed the immediate constraints that had been preventing her from focusing fully on her Ph.D. studies. Before receiving this support, economic limitations forced her to struggle with balancing financial survival and academic work, creating wider barriers to her educational progress.
