Senior officials from the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, visited Manipur in early September 2026 to assess how rural schemes are being carried out on the ground. The two-day visit covered Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts and involved direct meetings with villagers, self-help groups and local government teams.
What the visit covered
The Ministry of Rural Development team, led by Shri Altaf Hussain Haji, Deputy Director General and State Nodal Area Officer for the state, visited from 8 to 10 September 2026. Shri Rajesh Kumar, Deputy Director at MoRD New Delhi, accompanied him.
During the visit, officials met with Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and people receiving benefits from various rural schemes. They examined how well these programmes are working and looked for ways to reach more villagers. Key schemes reviewed included:
- Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G), a housing scheme for rural areas
- National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), which provides pensions
- Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), which supports self-help groups
The officials heard complaints from beneficiaries about delayed payments under PMAY-G and NSAP, and asked district officials to fix these issues quickly. They also noted that self-help groups under DAY-NRLM are performing well and members are working towards becoming Lakhpati Didis (women entrepreneurs earning over one lakh rupees annually).
The visiting team advised district administrations to speed up implementation, run awareness campaigns in villages so people know about available schemes, and coordinate better between different government departments to deliver benefits more effectively.
