The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has highlighted how its Swachhta Udyami Yojana (SUY), a component of the NAMASTE Scheme, has enabled a sanitation worker in Uttar Pradesh to grow his business and substantially increase his earnings. The scheme provides financial assistance to sanitation workers seeking to establish or expand self-employment ventures in the sector.
The Scheme and the Support
Ajay Kumar, a 39-year-old sanitation worker from Ghaziabad, received assistance under SUY to mechanise his operations. In October 2021, he was provided a total project package worth Rs. 11,34,000. This comprised a loan component of Rs. 7,25,500 and an upfront capital subsidy of Rs. 4,08,500. The funds enabled him to purchase a tractor-cum-sewer suction machine to strengthen his sanitation services.
His monthly loan instalment stands at Rs. 11,460, with a remaining loan balance of Rs. 1,03,000. Following the acquisition of mechanised equipment, his monthly income rose to approximately Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 35,000. After accounting for the monthly instalment, operating expenses and household costs, he manages to save between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 20,000 each month.
