The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs announced fresh approvals for housing under its flagship urban housing programme during a high-level meeting held in New Delhi on 10 September 2026. The Department of Urban Development has now sanctioned a total of 18.77 lakh houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0, with over 29,000 additional houses approved in this latest round. The scheme targets low-income and middle-income families living in urban areas across the country.
What was approved
The Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee, chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Urban Development, cleared housing assistance for more than 29,000 families under two programme verticals: Beneficiary Led Construction and Affordable Housing in Partnership. The new approvals cover six states—Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh.
Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0, eligible urban families earning up to Rs 9 lakh annually can access housing through multiple routes. They may build their own pucca house, purchase a property in scheme-approved projects, rent affordable housing, or receive interest subsidy assistance for home loans.
The programme reserves housing for priority groups. Of the 18.77 lakh houses sanctioned so far, 17.19 lakh (92 per cent) are being allotted to women. Additionally, 1.80 lakh houses have been allotted to senior citizens. The scheme has also set aside 3.25 lakh houses for Scheduled Caste families, 1.02 lakh for Scheduled Tribe families and 8.22 lakh for Other Backward Class families.
Looking ahead, the ministry said it will hold sanctioning meetings every second week of each month to speed up approvals and implementation across states.
