India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced the start of formal negotiations to expand its existing trade agreement with MERCOSUR, the South American trade bloc. The announcement was made jointly by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Uruguay’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mario Lubetkin, who currently holds the rotating presidency of MERCOSUR. The move aims to deepen economic ties between the two trading partners.
What is being negotiated
India and MERCOSUR have agreed to broaden their current Preferential Trade Agreement beyond its existing scope. The two sides intend to include fresh areas of mutual economic interest in the expanded agreement. Both parties are presently working to finalise the Terms of Reference, a document that will set out what subjects will be covered and how the new agreement will be structured.
The expansion is being pursued with the goal of strengthening economic relations between India and the MERCOSUR member countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay). The talks are expected to create new commercial opportunities and benefits for businesses and industries on both sides.

If negotiations succeed, Indian exporters and importers may gain better access to South American markets through lower tariffs and fewer trade barriers.
