The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has announced fresh milestones under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA), its national campaign against substance abuse. The campaign has now reached over 34 crore citizens across India, including more than 13.70 crore young people and 10.64 crore women. The Ministry says it is working to strengthen community participation and expand treatment access through trained volunteers and new rehabilitation facilities.
Campaign Scale and Infrastructure
According to the Ministry, more than 1.67 lakh volunteers and community leaders have received training in identifying addiction and providing support to affected individuals. Over 755 new de-addiction facilities have been set up in the past two years. These include District De-addiction Centres, Addiction Treatment Facilities and centres operating within prison systems.
The campaign has conducted more than 31.40 lakh awareness and outreach activities across the country. More than 1.67 lakh Nasha Mukti Mitras, community volunteers, have joined the initiative to strengthen grassroots participation against drug abuse.
The Ministry provides financial support to state governments, union territories, non-governmental organisations and government hospitals for education, awareness generation, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation programmes under its National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR).
So far, over 34 lakh citizens have taken the Nasha Mukti Pledge, both in physical form and online, voluntarily committing to support individuals affected by substance abuse and promote drug-free communities. The Ministry aims to mobilise over 10 crore citizens through physical and online participation in a National Mass Pledge event scheduled by the end of September 2026 to mark the campaign’s sixth anniversary.
