Ministry of Coal to Launch 16th Round of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions

The Ministry of Coal will begin the 16th round of commercial coal mine auctions on 17th September 2026 in New Delhi. The auction process, which opened to private companies in 2020, is now being expanded with a fresh set of coal blocks available for bidding. This move aims to boost domestic coal production, create jobs, and attract investment into India’s mining sector.

What is being offered and who can bid

The 16th round will make available both fully explored and partially explored coal blocks for auction. The bidding framework remains highly accessible. There are no restrictions on how companies can use the coal they mine. Foreign direct investment is permitted at 100 percent through the automatic route, meaning investors do not need special government approval. Upfront payments required from bidders are kept low and can be adjusted against the revenue share owed later.

These terms are intended to encourage smaller companies and first-time entrants to participate, while remaining attractive enough for larger established mining firms and technology-focused operators.

The track record so far

Over the past six years, 15 completed rounds of auctions have resulted in 147 coal mines being sold to the highest bidders. Of these, 44 were new companies entering the coal sector for the first time. According to Ministry projections, these auctioned mines will generate approximately Rs 47,500 crore in annual revenue, attract nearly Rs 55,000 crore in capital investment, and create around 4.9 lakh jobs across coal-bearing states.

What this means for you

The expansion of commercial coal mining helps reduce India’s reliance on coal imports and supports the goal of becoming self-reliant in energy. More domestic coal production can help keep electricity prices stable and affordable for households and businesses. For job seekers in coal-bearing regions, these auctions create employment opportunities in mining and related industries. The increased investment and production also contribute to the broader economic objective of making India more independent in critical sectors.
