The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has announced Swachhata Hi Seva 2026, an annual national cleanliness campaign that will run starting 17 September 2026. The initiative, jointly led by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation and the Department of Urban Development, aims to bring together citizens, government bodies, institutions and community organisations for collective action on sanitation and cleanliness.
Union Ministers Shri C. R. Patil, Shri Tokhan Sahu and others have called for widespread participation, particularly among students and young people, to drive lasting behaviour change around cleanliness practices.
Campaign Structure and Timeline
The 2026 campaign theme is ‘Swachhata Mein Sahbhag; Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat’, emphasising that cleanliness is everyone’s responsibility. The initiative is built around five key pillars:
- Identification and cleaning of difficult or dirty public spaces, known as Cleanliness Target Units
- Swachh Paathshala—Yuva for Swachhata, which involves student and youth engagement through facility visits and learning programmes on waste management and water conservation
- SafaiMitra Suraksha Evam Samman Shivir, providing health check-ups, safety equipment and welfare scheme linkages for sanitation workers
- Jan Bhagidari for Swachhata, focusing on citizen awareness and participation in waste segregation and composting
- Swachhata se Samriddhi, promoting waste recycling and reuse initiatives
A nationwide volunteer hour, ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’, is scheduled for 1 October 2026 from 8–9 AM. On 2 October 2026, observed as Swachh Bharat Diwas, special village and city council meetings will be held, tree-planting drives conducted, and citizens invited to take a Swachhata pledge via the MyGov platform.
What This Means for You
If you are a student or young person, the campaign specifically encourages your participation through educational visits to waste management sites and engagement in sports-based cleanliness activities. Citizens are asked to begin by cleaning their homes on 17 September and contribute one hour of volunteer work on 1 October. If you are a sanitation worker, support services and recognition programmes will be available through specially organised camps. Regardless of your role, you are expected to view cleanliness as a shared responsibility and adopt habits like four-way waste segregation at home.
