The Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance has started a nationwide cleanliness campaign called Swachhata Hi Seva 2026. The drive, which runs from 17 September to 2 October 2026, involves all banks, insurance companies, financial institutions and regulatory bodies under the department. The campaign aims to improve sanitation and public health across the country under the theme “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat”.
What the campaign will do
The Department will focus on four main areas:
- Cleaning difficult sites: Over 5,000 Cleanliness Target Units—areas that are hard to clean and need focused attention—will be identified and cleaned. Lead District Managers will coordinate with local authorities to transform at least 10 severely dirty spots in each district, along with cleaning of bus stands, beaches and community toilets.
- Support for sanitation workers: SafaiMitra Suraksha Evam Samman camps will provide health check-ups, personal protective equipment kits and help with enrolling sanitation workers and their families into financial programmes like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.
- Mass cleanup: On 1 October 2026 at 8:00 AM, a one-hour nationwide cleanliness drive called “Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, EkSaath” will mobilise bank employees, customers and citizens for public sanitation work.
- Waste management and tree planting: All offices will sort waste into four categories—dry, wet, hazardous and electronic—and establish reuse and recycling centres. Tree planting activities will be carried out at branch offices nationwide.
What this means for you
If you work in banking or financial services, you will be expected to participate in the cleanup drive. If you are a sanitation worker, your local bank or financial institution may organise health camps offering check-ups and help with financial security schemes. Citizens can also join the one-hour national cleanup on 1 October. All activities will be tracked and made public through the portal swachhatahiseva.gov.in.
