The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti have jointly launched Swachhata Hi Seva 2026, a nationwide cleanliness campaign. The launch event took place at Children’s Park, India Gate, New Delhi, and featured a tree plantation drive as part of the initiative ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam’. The campaign brings together government agencies, citizens, and institutions to reinforce the commitment to sanitation and cleanliness across the country.
Campaign Focus and Key Activities
The 2026 edition operates under the theme “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag; Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat”, emphasizing that cleanliness is a collective responsibility that requires participation from government, society, and every citizen.
The campaign has five main pillars:
- Transformation of Cleanliness Target Units and Clean Public Places through scheduled cleaning and beautification efforts
- Swachh Paathshala to engage students and youth through educational visits to waste management facilities, knowledge programmes, and competitions
- SafaiMitra Suraksha Evam Samman Shivirs offering preventive health checkups for sanitation workers and their enrolment in welfare schemes
- Jan Bhagidari for Swachhata involving awareness campaigns on the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026, source segregation, recycling initiatives, and community festivities
- Swachhata se Samriddhi focusing on converting waste into wealth and art through circular economy models
On 2 October, Special Gram Sabhas will be held in villages and Special Council Meetings in urban areas. These forums will discuss campaign outcomes, raise awareness about waste management rules and segregation practices, and assess progress toward Open Defecation Free Plus status in villages.
