The Department of Telecommunications has held its third investor engagement event in Bengaluru to promote India’s first integrated Telecom Manufacturing Zone being built in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The initiative, backed by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, aims to boost domestic telecom and electronics manufacturing as part of the government’s self-reliance goals.
Key Details of the Telecom Manufacturing Zone
The Telecom Manufacturing Zone will operate as a ready-to-use industrial cluster focused on telecom manufacturing, research and development, and innovation. It will cover production of mobile devices, optical fibre, telecom equipment and next-generation 5G and 6G technologies.
For Phase-I of the project:
- The Central Government is providing full funding of ₹493 crore
- Madhya Pradesh government has allocated approximately 170 acres of land at no cost and is offering investor incentives worth around ₹8,000 crore
- A special company has been created to oversee the zone, with 51 percent stake held by the Madhya Pradesh government and 49 percent by the Department of Telecommunications
Following investor roadshows in Delhi and Mumbai, nearly 24 companies have committed to participating in the zone. These companies have proposed investments totalling ₹5,500 crore and are expected to create around 18,000 jobs. The Bengaluru event added further commitments, with investors proposing an additional ₹700 to ₹800 crore in investment after board approvals.
What This Means for You
If you work in telecom, electronics or semiconductor manufacturing, the zone could create significant employment opportunities across production, research and design roles. For consumers, increased domestic manufacturing of telecom equipment may eventually lead to more Indian-designed products and potentially competitive pricing. The initiative aligns with the government’s push towards manufacturing technology products within India rather than importing them, which could influence long-term pricing and availability of telecom devices in the domestic market.
