About the NMMSS scheme
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme targets Class IX students who come from economically weaker backgrounds but demonstrate strong academic performance. The scheme aims to prevent talented students from dropping out of school due to financial constraints and to encourage them to pursue education through Class XII. Successful applicants receive the scholarship annually from Class IX onwards, subject to meeting the academic performance requirements each year.
Who can apply
Students must be enrolled in Class VIII at the time of applying and must have secured at least 55 per cent marks or the equivalent grade in their Class VII examinations. Students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes receive a 5-percentage point relaxation in the marks requirement, meaning they need 50 per cent or equivalent. The parental annual income must not exceed Rs 3.50 lakh. Applicants must study in state government schools, government-aided schools or local body schools.
How to apply and key dates
All applications are submitted through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). Before applying for the scholarship, students must complete their One-Time Registration (OTR) on the portal. The portal has been accepting applications since June 1, 2026. After submitting their application by October 31, students need to track the verification progress through two levels: verification by the Institute Nodal Officer at their school by November 15, and then verification by the District Nodal Officer by November 30, 2026.
Scholarship amount and disbursement
Eligible students receive Rs 12,000 per annum. This amount is transferred directly to their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring transparent and timely payment without intermediaries. The scholarship is provided for Class IX onwards and continues through Classes X, XI and XII, provided the student meets the academic requirements for renewal each year.
What this means for you
If you are a Class VIII student from an economically weaker section with strong marks in Class VII, you now have until October 31, 2026 to apply for this scholarship. The extended deadline provides more time to register on the portal and complete the application process. The Rs 12,000 annual support can significantly ease the financial burden on your family and enable you to continue schooling without worrying about fees. Students who have already applied should ensure their school verifies the application by November 15 so that the district verification can happen on schedule.
What happens next
After submitting applications by October 31, 2026, Institute Nodal Officers at schools will verify all applications by November 15, 2026. District Nodal Officers will then complete the final verification by November 30, 2026. Once verified, approved students will be notified and the scholarship will begin disbursement for the 2026-27 academic year.
