The Ministry of Communications has advanced India’s efforts to develop 6G technology through a series of announcements at the 3rd International Bharat 6G Symposium 2026 held in New Delhi. The Bharat 6G Alliance, a collaborative platform for 6G research and development, signed five new international agreements and released nine technical papers outlining India’s roadmap for next-generation wireless systems.
Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia inaugurated the symposium on 8 October 2026 at Yashobhoomi in Dwarka. The event brought together policymakers, telecom companies, technology alliances, academic institutions and research organisations from around the world to coordinate India’s participation in global 6G development.
Key facts
- Five new Memoranda of Understanding signed with GSMA, one6G Association, GTI Alliance Ltd, 6G Industry Forum and VoICE
- Nine technical white papers released covering 6G technology, spectrum, sensing, broadband, optical technologies, sustainability, security and connectivity
- Bharat 6G Alliance now has 17 total partnerships including 10 global and 2 domestic agreements
- Progress report released on the New Delhi Declaration, endorsed one year earlier at the 2025 symposium
- Symposium held 7-9 October 2026 at Yashobhoomi, Dwarka, New Delhi
New international partnerships
The Bharat 6G Alliance expanded its global network by signing agreements with five leading international bodies. These partnerships bring together different parts of the 6G ecosystem: mobile industry groups, standards-setting alliances, industry forums and voice and innovation initiatives. Each MoU aims to strengthen cooperation on research, innovation, standard-setting, technology development and the actual deployment of 6G networks.
These five new agreements add to the Alliance’s existing 12 partnerships. The expansion demonstrates India’s strategy to engage with multiple global stakeholders rather than relying on a single international body, positioning India as a participant in multiple forums shaping 6G standards and technology.
Nine technical white papers on 6G
The Bharat 6G Alliance released nine research papers covering different aspects of 6G development. These documents represent contributions from Indian industry, universities and research institutions and address both the technical and policy dimensions of 6G in India.
The papers cover technology landscape and research priorities for Indian trials, integrated sensing and communication systems that will allow 6G networks to both communicate and sense their environment, fixed wireless broadband solutions, optical technologies that will support 6G infrastructure, spectrum readiness beyond 2030, sustainability and carbon reduction in networks, integration of cellular and Wi-Fi systems, private enterprise networks with security features, and security of 6G overall.
These white papers serve as technical guidance for Indian researchers, companies and policymakers and contribute India’s technical perspective to international 6G discussions.
Progress on the New Delhi Declaration
The Alliance released a progress report one year after the New Delhi Declaration was adopted at the 2025 Bharat 6G Symposium. The Declaration established common principles for developing 6G as a secure, resilient, open, interoperable, inclusive and sustainable technology. It emphasised international cooperation in research, innovation and standard-setting.
The progress report documents how member organisations and MoU partners have acted on these principles over the past year and outlines future directions for continued collaboration. The report provides a mechanism for tracking collective progress toward the Declaration’s goals.
What this means for you
For technology companies and researchers in India, these developments signal government support for building India’s own 6G capabilities rather than importing finished technology. The white papers provide technical direction for research priorities. The international partnerships create channels for Indian innovators to collaborate with global teams and contribute to worldwide standards.
For students and academics, the work outlined in the white papers identifies emerging research areas where India is building expertise. These include sensing technology, wireless broadband, sustainable networks and network security.
For consumers, India’s active engagement in 6G development means Indian researchers will have a voice in designing the next-generation wireless technology that may eventually reach Indian smartphones and devices, rather than simply adopting foreign standards.
What happens next
The Bharat 6G Alliance will continue working with its international and domestic partners on the technical and policy dimensions outlined in the white papers. The symposium was scheduled to continue through 9 October 2026 with discussions on 6G vision, standards, technology leadership, trials and testbeds, artificial intelligence integration, sustainable networks, spectrum policy and industry applications.
