The Ministry of Communications has launched upgraded versions of two key postal applications and inaugurated 14 newly renovated Post Office buildings across India. The move is designed to make postal services more accessible through mobile apps and modernised physical infrastructure that blend traditional service values with digital tools.
What has been upgraded
The Department of Posts has rolled out improved versions of Dak MITRA and Dak Sewa applications. Dak MITRA is an operational platform used by more than 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices. It runs on Android handheld devices and allows postal staff to conduct transactions without paper, including mail booking, doorstep delivery using OTP verification, banking services, insurance offerings, Aadhaar-based identity verification, cash handling, and premium collection for postal life insurance schemes.
Dak Sewa is a citizen-facing application providing round-the-clock access to postal services such as tracking shipments, booking parcels, filing complaints, locating nearby post offices, and calculating postal charges. The app operates in 23 Indian languages.
Alongside the app launches, the Department has completed renovation work on 14 Post Office buildings located in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Nagpur, Gurugram, Bengaluru and others. These renovations follow a design framework developed with the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, emphasising accessibility, customer experience and operational efficiency. The renovated buildings include features such as improved seating, clear signage, dedicated service counters, ATMs, and technology-enabled facilities for after-hours parcel booking where feasible.
Of an initial 40 Post Offices identified for modernisation across 17 states, 27 have been completed. The remaining three from this batch are expected to be ready by 31 August 2026. The Department plans to extend the renovation programme to 60 additional Post Offices during the current financial year.
What this means for you
Postal employees can now handle financial transactions and insurance services directly at your doorstep using digital tools, reducing the need for trips to post offices. Citizens can access most postal services through their phones at any hour, with the ability to track parcels, book shipments and lodge complaints without visiting a branch. Newly renovated post offices in your area will offer improved physical spaces with better accessibility and extended service hours through technology-enabled facilities.
