The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has highlighted how its NAMASTE-Swachhta Udyami Yojana (SUY) Initiative is helping young sanitation workers transition from unpaid labour to independent business owners. The scheme provides financial support and mechanised equipment to eligible candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds. The case of a 25-year-old from Uttar Pradesh shows how the programme is creating opportunities for economic self-reliance in the sanitation sector.
What the scheme provides
Under the NAMASTE-SUY Initiative, financial assistance comes as a combination of loan and subsidy. In the case described, the total project cost for a tractor fitted with a suction machine was ₹10,70,400. The beneficiary received a loan component of ₹6,77,800 and a capital subsidy of ₹3,92,600 in 2023. The subsidy covers a portion of the equipment cost, reducing the financial burden on the entrepreneur.
The scheme targets sanitation workers from Scheduled Castes and other economically weaker sections who wish to establish their own mechanised sanitation businesses. Beneficiaries must have practical experience in sanitation work and the willingness to become self-employed.
Financial outcome and income impact
The beneficiary in this case, who previously worked without fixed wages assisting his father, now earns between ₹30,000 and ₹35,000 monthly. This income is calculated after accounting for operational costs and his monthly loan instalment of ₹14,517. The regular earnings allow him to support a household of eight family members while building savings and managing loan repayment.
