Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with founders and chief executives of India’s emerging space technology companies on 23 August 2026. The interaction showcased the progress made by private space startups following the government’s decision to open up the sector to commercial operators. The meeting highlighted how policy support has enabled Indian entrepreneurs to build world-class capabilities in rockets, satellite engines, space infrastructure and other advanced technologies.

What the startups are building

One startup has successfully launched India’s first private rocket in July 2026, placing satellites in orbit. The company has constructed three manufacturing facilities and plans to conduct one launch per month by mid-2027, with longer-term ambitions of weekly launches.

Another company has developed rocket engines ranked among the most advanced globally and is undergoing testing. A third startup is working on robotic spacecraft technology to capture defunct satellites and remove them from orbit.

Additional ventures include a company developing docking and refueling technologies with plans to establish a fuel station in space, and India’s first space pharmaceutical startup manufacturing medicines in microgravity conditions before returning them to Earth.

One startup is launching satellite-based agricultural innovation, planning deployment across 1 million farmers. After a single launch, this company received eight contracts in the last month, mostly from international clients.

The opening of India’s space sector to private companies is attracting returning talent from abroad and positioning India as a competitive player in global space commerce. Lower costs combined with India’s engineering talent and willingness to take risks could make Indian space startups attractive for international projects.
