Union Home Minister Amit Shah has conducted a comprehensive security review of the Siliguri Corridor, a strategically important region connecting mainland India to its northeastern states. The review involved senior officials from multiple central and state agencies, as well as the Chief Minister and senior police leadership of West Bengal. The meeting focused on strengthening security infrastructure and addressing cross-border challenges in this sensitive area.

The Multi Agency Centre’s Standing Focus Group on Siliguri Corridor presented progress reports and recommendations during the meeting. The Home Minister examined the status of infrastructure projects deemed critical for the corridor’s security. The discussion also encompassed four key areas: activities of Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), demographic shifts, illegal immigration, and border management issues.
Shah directed all participating agencies to adopt a “quadrangular approach” to border security and implement it rigorously. He instructed that pending infrastructure work be completed within set timelines. Agencies were also asked to expand their physical presence in the corridor by opening more institutional facilities. The Home Minister reviewed security arrangements for vital installations and ordered steps to prevent land encroachments. He emphasised the need for stronger measures against illegal immigration into the region.
In separate guidance to the West Bengal Chief Minister, Shah suggested exploring options to establish additional Sainik schools in North Bengal. He also recommended increasing the number of senior NCC cadets in the region and strengthening Civil Defense and Home Guards institutions throughout the Siliguri Corridor.
