The Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation inaugurated the ‘Gujarat Gaurav Sarovar’ in Amreli, Gujarat on 27 August 2026. The project is a water storage facility built by the Harikrishna Group and the Dholakia Foundation. The facility aims to address water availability for farming and drinking purposes across the region.
Details of the project
The Gujarat Gaurav Sarovar spans 21 acres and can hold 400 million liters of water. It will support groundwater conservation alongside providing water for agriculture and domestic use.
The inauguration took place in the context of broader water management efforts across Gujarat. The state has constructed approximately 10,000 reservoirs in North and Central Gujarat to store water from the Narmada River. Additionally, the number of check dams has grown significantly, contributing to improved farm productivity and increased vegetation cover in the region.
These efforts are part of wider national water policy initiatives. The Ministry of Jal Shakti, established at the national level, has overseen programs focused on rainwater harvesting through the ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign, as well as the introduction of drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation systems across the country. Through silt removal from existing dams without additional expenditure, irrigation capacity has increased by 160 percent nationally.
At the state level, schemes such as the SAUNI Yojana have channeled surplus Narmada water to reservoirs in Saurashtra, while the Sujalam Sufalam Yojana has focused on raising water tables in northern Gujarat villages.
