DoT and C-DOT Sign Agreement to Establish End-to-End Optical Network Testbed for Indigenous Optical Communication Technologies

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications, has entered into a five-year agreement with the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) to create a test facility for Indian optical communication technologies. This facility will help new companies and manufacturers move their inventions from research laboratories to actual market use. The test bed will be set up at C-DOT’s campus in New Delhi.

How the Agreement Works

The project is divided into two stages. During the first two years, the focus will be on building the physical infrastructure. This includes setting up optical core systems, optical access systems, quantum security technologies, and testing equipment from trusted suppliers. By the end of this setup phase, the test bed will be fully operational.

From year three to year five, the facility will move into a maintenance and operations phase. During this time, C-DOT will maintain the test bed, provide direct technical support to companies and researchers using it, and run educational programmes.

The test bed will also function as a training ground. Students, researchers, startup founders, and professionals in the telecom industry will get hands-on experience with advanced optical networking technologies. This aims to build skilled manpower in India’s growing telecom sector.
