The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying will launch fisheries infrastructure projects valued at Rs 36.49 crore on 1 September 2026 in Puducherry. Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh will preside over the event, which will also feature a capacity building meeting focused on seaweed farming cooperatives in the blue economy sector. The initiatives aim to strengthen fishing infrastructure and improve livelihoods for coastal fishing communities.
What is being launched
The projects fall under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the government’s flagship fisheries scheme. The event will take place at Kamarajar Manimadapam in Puducherry and will include a Multi-Dimensional Capacity Building Conclave for seaweed farming led by cooperatives.
Puducherry has already received significant investment through PMMSY. The Union Territory has upgraded the Thengaithittu Fishing Harbour and built a modern Fish Landing Centre at Nallavadu, with facilities for fish handling, berthing, auctioning and safety. These have benefited thousands of fishers and over 600 fishing families.
Karaikal in Puducherry has been designated as a Fishing Harbour Cluster under PMMSY. A new Smart and Integrated Fishing Harbour is being developed there with a total outlay of Rs 119.94 crore. This facility will provide safe vessel berthing, hygienic fish handling and efficient marketing systems.
The Advanced Centre for Innovation and Capacity Development (ACICD) at Karaikal promotes cooperative-led seaweed farming using modern technologies, particularly benefiting fisherwomen seeking sustainable livelihoods.
