The Ministry of Defence has announced that the Indian Army is moving to switch its establishments over to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) as a cleaner fuel option. A webinar held at Manekshaw Centre in Delhi brought together the Army, government bodies, and gas distribution companies to plan this transition, which aligns with India’s push towards a gas-based economy.
The Plan and Details
The Indian Army intends to convert 41 Army Stations to PNG during the financial year 2026–27. This will be followed by expansion to other establishments where such a switch is feasible. The webinar included representatives from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), Defence Estates Organisation, Military Engineer Services and City Gas Distribution entities.
During the event, the Indian Army released a PNG Guide. This document serves as a standardised reference manual for all Army establishments considering the transition. It covers four main areas:
- Administrative requirements
- Technical specifications
- Safety protocols
- Implementation procedures
The webinar sessions examined multiple aspects of shifting to PNG, including policy matters, regulatory compliance, statutory obligations, land acquisition, construction work, technical installation, safety measures, accounting practices and cost reimbursement. Participants also discussed how ready City Gas Distribution companies are to serve Army stations, shared lessons from stations already using PNG, and reviewed safety standards needed for safe operation.
