The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is organising the 89th edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle in Surat on September 6 to advance the Prime Minister’s vision of building a drug-free youth population. Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya will lead the cycling event, supported by Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi and several prominent athletes. The initiative seeks to connect fitness and sports with broader efforts to protect young people from substance abuse.
Event Details and Participation
The cycling event will commence at 6:00 AM from Sardar Patel Statue at Mangadh Chowk, travel through Mini Bazaar and Varachha Main Road, and conclude at Sarthana Zoo. Several accomplished sportspersons will join the ride, including Olympian Achanta Sharath Kamal (Padma Shri recipient), wrestler Sarita Mor (Arjuna Awardee), wrestler Shivani Pawar and Commonwealth Games medallist Rahul Mann. This is part of the broader Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan, which includes a 100-week Jan Bhagidari campaign focused on building sustained community action against drug abuse through sports, fitness awareness and public participation.
The Prime Minister had previously identified drug abuse as a serious national challenge affecting the country’s youth during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort.
What This Means for You
If you live in or around Surat, this cycling event offers an opportunity to participate in a community fitness activity while supporting a national campaign against substance abuse among young people. The event demonstrates how sports and active lifestyles are being positioned as practical tools to encourage healthier choices among youth. By bringing together ordinary citizens and elite athletes, the government is signalling that individual fitness and public health are linked to broader national development goals. Participation is open to residents of all fitness levels who wish to join the cause.
