The Union Home Minister held a review meeting in Panaji to assess law and order issues in Goa alongside Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant. The Ministry of Home Affairs meeting covered criminal justice, coastal security, drug trafficking and police capacity building across the state.
What was discussed and what changed
The three Naveen Nyay Sanhitas (new criminal law codes) and the Integrated Case Justice System have strengthened Goa’s justice outcomes. The conviction rate in the state has risen to 53 percent, up from an earlier 22 percent. Courts are now completing criminal cases within 6 to 8 months in many situations.
The meeting agenda included implementation progress on the new criminal laws, drug-related offences, coastal security concerns, tracking fugitives, disaster management, police modernisation, handling of enemy properties, and removal of illegal migrants involved in crime and narcotics.
The Home Minister noted that violent crime is declining in Goa. However, cybercrime, drug-related offences and violations involving foreign nationals remain areas requiring stronger enforcement action.
The Union Home Minister stressed the need for regular tracking of crime patterns, connections between different types of crimes, movement of criminals across state borders, and monitoring of coastal areas. He urged that all measures by the central and state governments should position Goa as the leading state for law and order across India.
The Home Minister also stated that the central government is committed to supporting smaller states through professional assistance, administrative capacity building and development initiatives to meet the target of a developed India by 2047.
