The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology announced that Union Minister of State Shri Jitin Prasada led India’s delegation at the G20 Innovation Ministers’ Meeting held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on 1–2 September 2026. The meeting, hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, brought together innovation leaders from G20 nations to shape global technology policy. The discussions will influence how India and other countries approach artificial intelligence, semiconductors, digital infrastructure and emerging technologies in the coming years.
What was agreed and discussed
The G20 Ministers released a joint Innovation Ministerial Statement recognising that new technologies can unlock prosperity and opportunity. The statement built consensus around six key areas: creating policies that encourage innovation, using technology for growth and opportunity, building a skilled workforce in technical fields, developing intellectual property rules for artificial intelligence, establishing standards for AI systems, and supporting industrial innovation and supply chain investment.
Ministers also endorsed the Carolina Principles for Emerging Technologies, which call on countries to invest in foundational research, strengthen the path from laboratory discovery to commercial products, and enable safe adoption of trusted technologies. Additional outcomes included the AI Prosperity Objectives and the AI Prosperity Compact, designed to develop technical talent across G20 nations and create opportunities for private sector involvement.
Beyond the main meeting, Shri Prasada held bilateral discussions with officials from the European Union, France, Germany, the African Union and the United States. With the US Secretary of Commerce, discussions centred on deepening cooperation in semiconductors, artificial intelligence and data centres. India also proposed strengthening AI technology partnerships and creating shared safeguards for AI systems. During a visit to Duke University, the Minister met university leadership and toured the Robotics Laboratory to explore potential collaboration in robotics, artificial intelligence and biomedical research.
