The Ministry of Law and Justice has announced the appointment of new judges to two high courts. The President, acting on the advice of the Chief Justice of India and using powers granted by the Constitution, has approved these judicial appointments for the Chhattisgarh High Court and the Gauhati High Court.
Who has been appointed
Two judicial officers have been appointed as Judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court:
- Santosh Sharma
- Sushma Sawant
Three persons have been appointed as Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court:
- Sudhir Kumar, a judicial officer
- Nchumbemo Mozhui, an advocate
- Helen Dawngliani, a judicial officer
All appointments were made following consultation with the Chief Justice of India, as required by the Indian Constitution.
What this means for you
These appointments strengthen the judicial capacity of two important high courts serving large regions of India. The Chhattisgarh High Court now has additional strength to handle the legal cases brought before it by citizens and organisations in that state. The Gauhati High Court, which serves the northeastern states, similarly gains more judges to manage its caseload. Faster case disposal and easier access to justice for people in these regions may improve as a result of having more judicial officers available to hear matters.
