The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has ordered an inquiry into the death of Gulzar Singh from Sangrur district in Punjab. The move follows a complaint that Singh, before his death, made serious accusations against a state minister and certain village panchayat members and claimed to have consumed poison out of fear. The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment oversees the NCSC, which has authority to investigate matters affecting scheduled castes.
What the NCSC has done
The Commission has issued formal notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Punjab. Both officials have been asked to provide a complete factual report and details of any action taken on Singh’s allegations within five days of receiving the notice.
According to reports, Singh had previously raised concerns about narcotic substances in the state before a state Finance Minister. A video recorded before his death contained his claims and named specific individuals from the village panchayat. The complaint was filed by Sheetal Angural, former MLA and State President of BJP SC Morcha, Punjab.
NCSC Chairman Kishor Makwana called the incident extremely serious and sensitive. He noted that the specific allegations made in Singh’s video against a minister and named panchayat members require an impartial, independent and high-level investigation. The Chairman has announced a personal visit to Sangrur on 10 September 2026 to examine the case and verify the facts alleged.
