The Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution announced that the National Consumer Helpline has recovered over ₹105 crore in refunds for consumers over a fifteen-month span. The development affects anyone who has faced refund issues while purchasing goods or services across India.
The Numbers and How It Works
Between 25 April 2025 and 31 July 2026, the National Consumer Helpline addressed 1,66,189 complaints related to refunds across 35 different business sectors. The e-commerce industry was the largest source of these grievances, with 1,00,466 complaints resulting in refunds totalling more than ₹74 crore. The Travel & Tourism sector came second, with refunds exceeding ₹10 crore. During the three-month period from May to July 2026 alone, e-commerce refunds processed ranged from as little as ₹1 to as much as ₹35,83,790.
The helpline works by forwarding consumer complaints digitally to the relevant companies and tracking their response within set timeframes. This is done before consumers need to approach formal consumer courts, making it a quicker resolution method.
The National Consumer Helpline is accessible through multiple channels in 17 languages: a toll-free number (1915), WhatsApp and SMS (8800001915), email, a mobile app, the INGRAM Portal, and the UMANG app. Complaints have arrived from major cities as well as remote areas, showing the platform reaches across the country.
What This Means For You
If you have ordered something online or booked a service and face a refund problem, you now have a free government channel to escalate your complaint without immediately going to court. The helpline has shown it can push companies to process refunds faster, including full money-back resolutions for wrong or delayed deliveries. Using this service could save you time and legal expenses while getting your money back.
