The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme places young people who are neither in full time education nor in full time work into twelve month internships at India’s largest companies. It was announced as part of the Prime Minister’s employment package and is administered by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The stipend is split, with the government paying the larger share directly to the intern and the host company paying the rest from its corporate social responsibility funds, alongside a one time joining grant for incidental costs.
Eligibility is deliberately narrow at the top end. Graduates of the IITs, IIMs, national law universities, IISERs, IIITs and NIDs are excluded, as are holders of professional qualifications such as CA, CS, MBA or MBBS, and families earning above the income ceiling or containing a permanent government employee. Interns are covered under two central government insurance schemes at no cost.
