Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects valued at over ₹35,000 crore in Vadodara, Gujarat on 8 September 2026. The projects span infrastructure, manufacturing, and skills development. The announcement affects farmers, manufacturers, rail commuters, students preparing for competitive exams, and workers across multiple sectors.
What the projects include
The centrepiece is the completion of the 2,800-kilometre Dedicated Freight Corridor, which separates passenger and freight traffic on rail networks. According to the Prime Minister, the corridor now allows over 430 cargo trains to run daily. Journey times have reduced significantly: a trip that took 30 hours by truck now takes 10-12 hours by rail, and covering 100 kilometres takes less than half the previous time.
A double-stack container train successfully transported cargo from Mumbai’s JNPT Port to Vadodara equivalent to more than 250 truck loads in a single journey.
The Prime Minister also announced new rail services reaching tribal regions in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra that had no rail connectivity for decades, including a new train to Chhota Udepur and Alirajpur.
On manufacturing, India has produced 50,000 modern railway coaches and introduced nearly 2.5 lakh wagons since 2014. The government has built 200 GW of solar capacity. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has enabled 55 lakh families nationally, including 11 lakh in Gujarat, to generate their own electricity.
A new initiative will provide free coaching for competitive exams to reduce the financial burden on poor and middle-class students. The government announced plans for a national campaign to develop artificial intelligence skills among youth for applications in agriculture, healthcare, and robotics.
