The Ministry of Coal has clarified the sequence of events leading to the auction of the Tara coal block, which was put up for bidding in the 15th round of commercial coal mine auctions in 2026. The ministry said that recent media reports about this auction contained incomplete information and did not account for key developments that occurred after 2023.
The clarification addresses confusion about why the block, which was initially withdrawn from auctions, was later reintroduced for bidding.
What happened and when
In 2023, when the Tara coal block was offered under the 7th tranche of commercial auctions, the Government of Chhattisgarh requested that coal blocks in the Hasdeo Arand area be excluded. The reason given was that these blocks overlapped with the Lemru elephant corridor, an important wildlife zone. Following this request, the ministry removed the Tara block and other Hasdeo Arand coal blocks from subsequent auction rounds.
On 11 December 2025, the Chhattisgarh government sent a fresh letter stating that the Tara coal block, after boundary revision, now lay outside the Lemru elephant corridor. Based on this communication and after the Coal Mines Privatisation Development and Implementation Limited revised the block boundary, the ministry included Tara in the 15th round of commercial coal mine auctions.
The auction received significant market interest, with 9 bidders participating. The successful bid came at a revenue share of 37.50%. The block is projected to generate annual state revenue exceeding Rs 1,200 crores and create employment for over 8,000 people.
