PM YASASVI is an umbrella programme that folded several older scholarship and hostel schemes for Other Backward Classes, Economically Backward Classes and Denotified, Nomadic and Semi Nomadic Tribes into one structure. It has five parts. Two are broad based scholarships, one for classes nine and ten and one for study after class ten. Two are highly selective top class education components, one placing students in reputed schools and one supporting them through reputed colleges. The fifth funds hostel construction for OBC students.
The scholarship components are means tested and applied for on the National Scholarship Portal through the state backward classes welfare department. The top class components have been selected through a separate entrance test conducted by the National Testing Agency, and they carry much larger sums because they cover tuition and residential costs at institutions the family could not otherwise afford.
