The Ministry of Civil Aviation has launched the next phase of the UDAN scheme, the regional connectivity initiative that aims to expand air travel to underserved parts of India. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu unveiled a new “Challenge Mode” system and signed agreements with 21 States and Union Territories to accelerate aerodrome development. The move signals a shift from planning to on-ground implementation of aviation infrastructure across the country.
What has been announced
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has introduced a Challenge Mode Portal for Aerodrome Development as part of modified UDAN. Under this system, State Governments and Union Territory Administrations can now nominate airstrips and helipads through a dedicated online portal for development and operation under the scheme.
A total of 21 Memoranda of Understanding have been signed between the Ministry of Civil Aviation, participating States and UTs, and the Airports Authority of India. These agreements establish a formal framework for identifying, developing and operating aviation infrastructure based on each region’s specific connectivity needs.
The modified UDAN scheme rests on four pillars: affordability for passengers, sustainability of airline operations, transparent Challenge Mode selection for projects, and promotion of indigenous aircraft manufacturing.
According to the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, the next phase targets 120 new destinations and aims to serve an additional 4 crore passengers over the next ten years.
The original UDAN scheme, launched in 2016, has operationalized 687 routes and 95 aerodromes so far, carrying around 1.71 crore passengers on more than 3.66 lakh flights.
