What happens in the essay round
Shortlisted participants must now submit essays of exactly 500 words on the MY Bharat portal by October 15, 2026. Each participant will write on one of 10 designated regional themes that align with India’s development priorities. These themes cover areas such as future governance, urban transformation, climate security, demographic dividends, sustainable industrialization, manufacturing and entrepreneurship, tribal leadership, innovation economy, technology and blue economy. Different states and union territories have been assigned specific themes to ensure all regions contribute perspectives relevant to their local context and national priorities.
Participants have the flexibility to write their essays in any of the 23 languages available on the MY Bharat portal, making the competition accessible across India’s linguistic diversity.
The multi-stage selection process
VBYLD 2027 operates as a five-stage merit-based selection journey. After the essay challenge, the most promising contributors will be shortlisted for in-person presentation rounds at the district level. This will be conducted across all districts for the first time, bringing the competition closer to grassroots communities. District-level winners then proceed to State and Union Territory level presentations, where they compete with other district selections. Finally, the top performers from each of the 10 regional themes form the national contingent that participates in the National VBYLD, where India’s best young leaders present their ideas and vision.
The purpose and alignment
The programme aligns with the government’s vision to create opportunities for talented youth to participate in public life and nation-building. By requiring participants to address specific development themes, VBYLD 2027 encourages young Indians to think critically about policy solutions and innovation in sectors crucial to India’s growth. The 10 themes span governance, environment, human capital, industry, culture, tribal welfare and technology, reflecting a comprehensive approach to national development.
What this means for you
If you qualified in the quiz, you have until October 15, 2026 to submit your essay on the MY Bharat portal. Ensure your essay is exactly 500 words and addresses the theme assigned to your state or union territory. You can write in the language you are most comfortable with. Your essay is your chance to present original ideas and solutions that could influence policy conversations at district and state levels. If selected, you will have opportunities to present in person at district, state and potentially national forums, giving you direct access to government decision-makers and a platform to contribute to India’s development vision.
What happens next
After the October 15 essay deadline, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will shortlist the top essays for the district-level presentation round. These in-person competitions will be conducted across all districts. Selected presenters will then advance to State and Union Territory level events, leading eventually to the National VBYLD where the final cohort of young leaders will be recognised.
