India has endorsed an international commitment called the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, joining more than 20 other countries in a coordinated effort to shape the next generation of wireless networks. The Ministry of Communications made this announcement on 1-2 September 2026 during the G20 Innovation Ministerial in North Carolina. The Department of Telecommunications will now lead India’s work on this initiative.
What India is committing to
India aims to contribute 10 percent of global 6G standards and patents under this framework. The Call to Action is built on principles of openness, interoperability, security, resilience, resource efficiency and innovation-led competition. Participating countries include Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea and others.
The initiative lays out a timeline for member countries:
- Within one month: identify expert points of contact and list relevant industry and academic partners
- Within three months: map the emerging 6G landscape with the telecommunications sector and identify barriers to leadership
- Within six months: develop strategies for secure and sustainable 6G supply chains at expert level
- Within twelve months: convene in person in 2027 to share progress, lessons and best practices
Cooperation areas include sharing information on 6G research, supporting secure technology deployment globally, assessing cybersecurity risks, improving supply chain transparency, and working with industry on global 6G standards.

India is positioning itself as a leader in next-generation telecom technology rather than simply adopting standards set by others. The Department of Telecommunications will coordinate with government agencies, industry players and universities to build India’s capabilities in 6G technology and standards-setting. This builds on existing work including the Bharat 6G Vision and domestic 4G and 5G development. India’s participation supports its broader goal of self-reliance in technology and creating a developed nation by 2047.
