The Ministry of Railways has won Cabinet approval for five railway line expansion projects that will add roughly 540 kilometres to India’s rail network. The work spans 17 districts across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, and comes at a total cost of Rs. 10,021 crore. All projects are scheduled for completion by 2029-30.
The five projects and their scope
The five projects are:
- Arakkonam to Renigunta: adding 3rd and 4th lines over 77 km
- Whitefield to Bangarapet: adding 3rd and 4th lines over 47 km
- Hosur to Omalur: doubling the line over 147 km
- Salem to Karur to Dindigul: doubling the line over 159 km
- Secunderabad (Ghatksar) to Kazipet: multitracking over 110 km
The expansion is designed to reduce congestion and improve how efficiently trains move along these routes. The projects will benefit approximately 2,121 villages with a combined population of about 52 lakh people.
Several major temples and tourist sites will gain improved rail access, including Tirupati, Kodaikanal Hills, Hogennakkal Falls and Kolar Gold Fields. The routes also handle crucial freight, including coal, cement, iron, steel, automobiles, grains and fertilizers. The upgraded capacity is expected to carry an additional 47 million tonnes of freight per year.
Because rail transport burns less fuel and produces fewer emissions than road transport, these projects align with India’s climate commitments. The work is expected to reduce oil imports by about 8 crore litres annually and cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 42 crore kilograms, equivalent to planting 2 crore trees.
