Ujjwala exists to get women out of smoky kitchens. Cooking on firewood, dung cakes or coal damages the lungs and eats up hours of collecting fuel. Under this scheme a woman from a poor household gets an LPG connection without paying the security deposit, which the government covers with Rs 2,050 for a standard 14.2 kg connection or Rs 1,300 for a 5 kg one. The first refill and the gas stove are also free.
Because refills can still be expensive, the government pays a targeted subsidy of Rs 300 on each 14.2 kg cylinder, credited directly to the bank account of the Ujjwala consumer.
The connection must be in the woman’s name and no one else in the household may already have an LPG connection. If your family is not on any of the listed poor categories, you can still apply using a simple self declaration of poverty at the distributor.

How to apply
- Choose your gas company at pmuy.gov.in and click through to the Indane, Bharatgas or HP Gas application page, or collect the KYC form from any LPG distributor
- Fill the KYC form, tick the eligibility category and sign the self declaration
- Submit the form with Aadhaar, bank and family details at the distributor showroom
- The distributor verifies the papers and confirms no existing connection in the household
- Collect the cylinder, regulator and free stove from the distributor and receive the free first refill
