Biometric Aadhaar Authentication Mandatory for Subsidised Domestic LPG Refills from 1 October 2026

The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has announced that from 1 October 2026, households buying subsidised cooking gas will need to have completed Biometric Aadhaar Authentication. Nearly 28 crore consumers, or about 90 per cent of all domestic LPG users, have already done this and face no change. Those who have not authenticated will need to complete the process to continue buying cylinders at the government-supported price.

What is changing and how to authenticate

The requirement applies only to consumers booking refills at the Retail Selling Price with subsidy from 1 October onwards. Consumers who have already authenticated do not need to do anything further.

For those still needing to authenticate, there are three simple ways:

  • During delivery: the LPG delivery person can complete it on the spot using a mobile application
  • At the distributor showroom: visit your local LPG dealer and authenticate there
  • Using the oil company app: Indane customers can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas users can use HelloBPCL, and HP Gas customers can use HP PAY

Video guides for self-authentication are available on the PMUY portal. As of 19 September 2026, 27.43 crore active consumers had completed authentication, representing 89.9 per cent coverage.

For those unwilling or unable to authenticate, an alternative exists. Such consumers can register their choice through their oil company’s digital channels—web portal, mobile app, WhatsApp, or IVRS—and will receive LPG at market price without subsidy, available in 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders where locally available.

Why this rule exists

Domestic LPG is sold well below its actual cost. The government compensated oil companies with ₹22,000 crore in FY 2022-23 and is paying ₹30,000 crore each in FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27. Accumulated losses to public sector oil companies have crossed ₹62,000 crore. Authentication ensures this subsidy reaches only genuine households and prevents diversion to commercial users, removes duplicate connections, and closes eligibility gaps.

What this means for you

If you already authenticated, nothing changes—continue as before. If you have not, complete it by 1 October through whichever method suits you best. After that date, refills at subsidised prices require prior authentication. Those choosing not to authenticate can still buy LPG but will pay the full market price.
