The Union Cabinet has approved a Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) payment of 78 days’ wages to over 11 lakh railway workers across India. The Ministry of Railways announced the decision, which will distribute Rs 2009.61 crore among eligible non-gazetted staff as recognition of strong railway performance in the 2025-26 financial year.
This annual bonus is traditionally paid before the Durga Puja and Dusshera holidays. The approval comes as Indian Railways recorded significant operational achievements this year, including record freight movement and passenger transport.
Key facts
- Total bonus amount: Rs 2009.61 crore
- Number of employees eligible: 11,40,770 non-gazetted railway staff
- Bonus period: 78 days of wages
- Maximum per employee: Rs 17,951 for 78 days
- Approval date: 14 October 2026
- Railway freight load (2025-26): 1670 Million Tonnes (record)
- Railway passenger capacity (2025-26): 7.41 Billion passengers
Who receives this bonus
The PLB applies to non-gazetted railway employees across all major job categories. These include track maintenance workers, locomotive pilots, train managers known as guards, station masters, supervisory staff, technicians, technician helpers, pointsmen, clerical and ministerial staff, and other Group C classified positions.
The bonus does not apply to gazetted officers, who form a small portion of the railway workforce. Gazetted employees are senior-level officers whose appointments are published in the official government gazette.
How the bonus amount is calculated
The PLB is calculated as a fixed number of days of wages rather than a percentage of salary. This year, the amount equals 78 days of an employee’s regular daily wages. The maximum payable amount is capped at Rs 17,951 per person for this 78-day period, though individual payments will vary based on each worker’s basic salary and wage structure.
The total outlay of Rs 2009.61 crore is distributed across all 11.4 lakh eligible workers, making this a substantial recognition of workforce contribution.
Why this bonus is being paid
The Ministry of Railways frames the PLB as an incentive scheme designed to motivate employees toward improved performance and service quality. The bonus recognizes exceptional operational results achieved by railway staff during the financial year.
In 2025-26, Indian Railways achieved two major milestones: freight loading reached a record 1670 Million Tonnes, and the system transported nearly 7.41 billion passengers. These metrics reflect efficient operations across freight corridors and passenger networks, attributed to the work of frontline railway staff in maintenance, operations and customer service roles.
When the payment will be made
The bonus is traditionally disbursed before major festivals, specifically before Durga Puja and Dusshera celebrations. This timing allows employees to use the additional funds for festival expenses and travel. The Cabinet approval in mid-October suggests payments will begin shortly thereafter, ahead of the festival season.
What this means for railway workers
For eligible railway employees, the 78-day bonus represents a significant additional payment in their October-November salary period. Most workers will receive amounts below the Rs 17,951 maximum, depending on their basic wage structure, but the bonus will provide meaningful relief during the festival season.
The inclusion of diverse worker categories—from track maintainers to station masters—recognizes contributions across the entire railway operation spectrum. For workers in lower pay grades, the maximum Rs 17,951 represents a substantial interim reward.
This announcement also signals continued financial commitment to railway workforce welfare despite fiscal pressures on government budgets. The scheme maintains the tradition of linking employee compensation to organizational performance, creating alignment between worker interests and railway service quality.
