The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) Jammu Bench has emerged as one of the country’s best performers in clearing service-related cases filed by government employees. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated a new office and court complex for the Jammu Bench and highlighted the tribunal’s record of swift case disposal and low appeal rates.
The Numbers and Performance
Since its establishment in 1985, the CAT has handled over 10 lakh cases nationwide, with approximately 93 percent disposed of by June 2026. The Jammu and Srinagar Benches together received 41,389 cases: 20,984 transferred from the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir High Court and 20,405 fresh cases. Of these, 18,392 cases from the High Court transfer and 13,952 fresh cases were resolved, leaving only 9,452 cases pending.
Only 8 percent of cases from the Jammu Bench proceeded to appeal at the High Court, indicating that most employees accepted the tribunal’s decisions as final. The Jammu Bench now operates with two Division Benches, comprising two Judicial Members and two Administrative Members to handle the workload.
Filing a case before CAT costs just ₹50 for an Original Application. Miscellaneous Applications, Review Applications and Contempt Petitions attract no fee, making it an affordable forum for government employees seeking redressal.
The new facility at Bahu Plaza in Jammu provides expanded space and modern infrastructure to support faster case processing. The CAT has also expanded its digital tools, including e-filing, video conferencing, online payment of fees, SMS and email alerts, and online access to case information through mobile devices.
