Creative Economy is Emerging as India’s Next Growth Frontier, Offering New Opportunities for Young Indians: Dr. L. Murugan

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has highlighted the creative economy as a major area for growth in India, with significant job opportunities for young people. Dr. L. Murugan, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, made these remarks while addressing the Jindal Policy Conclave at O.P. Jindal Global University on the theme of law, policy and the creative economy.

What the announcement covers

The creative economy in India spans multiple sectors including film, music, gaming, animation, design, publishing, advertising and digital content. Globally, the creative economy contributes 3.1 per cent to world GDP and provides 6.2 per cent of global employment.

Within India, approximately 57 million people already work in cultural and creative fields. The country’s media and entertainment sector alone is valued at ₹2.5 trillion.

The Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) sector is expected to need nearly 2 million skilled professionals by 2030. To prepare young people for these roles, the Government has announced support for:

  • The Indian Institute of Creative Technologies
  • AVGC Creator Labs to be established in 15,000 schools and 500 colleges

Dr. Murugan also emphasised that growth in creative sectors must be backed by proper legal and policy frameworks. These should include copyright protection for creators, fair compensation systems and responsible use of artificial intelligence in creative work.

What this means for you

If you are a student or young job seeker, the creative economy offers expanding career paths beyond traditional fields. Training facilities being set up in schools and colleges will help you develop industry-relevant skills, particularly in animation, gaming and visual effects.

For those interested in entrepreneurship, the growing creative sectors provide opportunities to build new businesses around content, design and digital media. However, you should understand that the sector’s development depends on strong protections for intellectual property and fair rules for how new technologies like artificial intelligence are used in creative work.
