What is E-Sanjeevani

E-Sanjeevani is India’s national telemedicine platform launched to connect patients with healthcare providers remotely. It was developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) Mohali and is operated under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The platform allows citizens to consult doctors without travelling to hospitals, especially benefiting people in rural, remote and underserved areas.

Expanding from primary to specialist care

E-Sanjeevani was originally designed to deliver primary healthcare consultations through a network of health centres. The platform is now being expanded to offer specialist care. Patient-to-doctor teleconsultation services for select specialities have started at three AIIMS centres: Jodhpur, Jammu and Patna. The government plans to progressively extend this to other premier institutions including JIPMER and PGIMER Chandigarh. This expansion allows patients to access specialist expertise from home without long-distance travel to tertiary-care facilities.

Technology upgrades and integration

E-Sanjeevani has been upgraded with an Artificial Intelligence-powered Clinical Decision Support System (AI-CDSS). This system assists healthcare providers during consultations by suggesting diagnoses and treatment options, helping improve the quality and consistency of medical advice. The AI system won a Gold Award under the National Awards for e-Governance 2026. Additionally, E-Sanjeevani has been linked with the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS)-112, allowing emergency services to connect patients with remote medical expertise for faster coordinated care during health emergencies.

Who is using the platform

Women comprise 57.14% of E-Sanjeevani users, indicating strong adoption among women who may face barriers in accessing physical health facilities. Older citizens are also major users: 40.15% of all consultations are by people aged 46 years and above, with 16.25% by those aged 60 and above. This pattern shows that telemedicine is reaching population groups who traditionally face challenges accessing healthcare due to mobility, time constraints or distance.

Scale of operations

E-Sanjeevani operates through multiple touchpoints across the country. The platform connects 1.42 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandir centres (health outposts under the Ayushman Bharat scheme) with specialists at 19,473 medical hubs. There are also 901 dedicated online out-patient departments. Over 2.4 lakh healthcare providers are registered on the platform. The system is available in 15 languages to ensure accessibility across linguistic regions. On average, the platform now records 2.5 to 3 lakh consultations daily, with a record single day reaching 6.3 lakh consultations.

What this means for you

If you live in a rural or remote area, E-Sanjeevani offers free or low-cost doctor consultations without requiring travel to a city hospital. Women and older adults benefit particularly, as the platform saves time and reduces mobility challenges. For patients needing specialist care, the new rollout at AIIMS and other premier institutions means you may now consult specialists remotely. If you are covered under Ayushman Bharat or enrolled in your local health centre, you can access these services. The platform operates in multiple Indian languages, making it accessible regardless of your linguistic background.

What happens next

The Ministry of Health plans to expand specialist teleconsultation services beyond the three AIIMS centres to other premier government medical institutions including JIPMER and PGIMER Chandigarh. As the platform continues to evolve, further technical integrations and service expansions are expected to strengthen linkages across primary, secondary and tertiary levels of care.
