The Department of Posts has announced a series of digital and financial services initiatives in Telangana as part of National Postal Week, which runs from October 9 to 15, 2026. The Chief Postmaster General of Telangana Circle, Shri D.S.V.R. Murthy, outlined how India Post is modernising its operations while expanding access to banking, insurance and government services across urban and rural areas of the state.
These developments underscore a broader strategy to transform India Post into a technology-enabled network that reaches citizens at the grassroots level. The initiatives aim to deepen financial inclusion among rural populations, generate employment and offer real-time digital tracking for postal services.

Digital transformation initiatives
India Post has deployed APT 2.0, an indigenously developed technology platform, to modernise its operations. A new digital address system called DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) has been created in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre under ISRO. This 10-character geo-coded system provides standardised digital address references for improved delivery accuracy.
The Door Step Service (DSS) application enables customers to track deliveries in real time. Speed Post services with guaranteed delivery within 24 hours or 48 hours have been introduced in Hyderabad, covering 94 PIN codes. Payment options at post office counters now include UPI and card transactions, while postmen can collect cash-on-delivery amounts through the DSS application.
Pension disbursement and government services
The postal network is serving as a critical channel for government benefit delivery. Approximately 20 lakh beneficiaries of the Cheyutha pension scheme receive monthly payments through post offices, with roughly Rs 500 crore disbursed each month. This makes postal branches key touchpoints for senior citizens and vulnerable populations in rural Telangana.
The 14 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras across the state have processed substantial transaction volumes, indicating that postal offices are also serving as access points for citizens applying for passports. The 263 Aadhaar Centres at post offices are facilitating identity registration and related services.
Financial inclusion and banking services
India Post is pursuing an ambitious financial inclusion agenda through postal banking. The Telangana Circle currently maintains 1.07 crore active Post Office Savings Bank accounts. The Department aims to bring 25 percent of the state’s rural population under financial inclusion through postal services by the end of the 2026–27 financial year. Within the same period, the Department aims to convert at least 10 percent of POSB accounts to digital transactions through internet banking and mobile banking platforms.
Insurance coverage has been expanded under two schemes. Postal Life Insurance (PLI) eligibility has been broadened to include professionals and graduates beyond government employees. Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) has been extended to urban citizens as well. During FY 2025–26, the Telangana Circle sold 71,233 new policies under both schemes and collected Rs 590.13 crore in premiums.
Employment and employment generation
The Department of Posts has used the Rozgar Mela initiative to create job opportunities. Across 17 tranches nationwide, 1,86,202 appointment or engagement offers were issued, of which 1,51,348 were for Gramin Dak Sevak positions. In Telangana, 1,272 candidates received offers, including 1,123 as Gramin Dak Sevaks. These positions fill critical roles in maintaining the postal network’s reach to remote and rural areas.
What this means for you
If you live in Telangana, postal services are expanding beyond mail delivery. You can now access faster parcel delivery through Speed Post, track deliveries in real time, and use digital payment methods at post offices. If you are a beneficiary of government pensions like Cheyutha, your monthly payments are processed through the postal network. Financial inclusion is a key focus, so if you are an unbanked rural citizen, postal offices are targeting you for POSB account opening and digital banking adoption. Insurance options through PLI and RPLI are now available to a broader population. If you need passport services or Aadhaar registration, postal offices provide these facilities locally.
What happens next
The Department of Posts aims to bring 25 percent of Telangana’s rural population into its financial inclusion programme by the end of FY 2026–27. During the same period, it plans to convert at least 10 percent of POSB accounts to digital transactions. National Postal Week activities will continue through October 15, 2026, highlighting additional services and achievements of the Department.
