Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a two-day International Conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” organised by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in New Delhi. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change hosted the event, which brought together judges, policymakers, scientists and environmental experts from 17 countries. During the inaugural session, the Prime Minister also released the NGT Mobile Application.
What the conference covers
The conference features four technical sessions on environmental and climate governance. Two sessions were held on the opening day. Technical Session-I examined climate justice, equity and inclusion, focusing on how climate action can be made fair and inclusive, as well as the environmental and social protections needed in climate programmes. Technical Session-II discussed the future of environmental law and how to strengthen institutions that enforce environmental rules, along with topics like sustainable cities, energy transition and green finance.
Delegates from 17 countries are participating, alongside representatives from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The conference aims to share research and best practices, build international partnerships, and develop recommendations for future cooperation on environmental challenges that cross national borders.
Union Minister Bhupender Yadav highlighted India’s renewable energy achievements, noting that non-fossil sources now account for 54.18 per cent of installed electricity capacity, exceeding India’s 2030 target of 50 per cent by nine years. He also pointed out that India ranks third globally in renewable energy capacity and is the world’s second-largest solar growth market. The Minister noted that India’s forest and tree cover has reached 8.27 lakh square kilometres and that India has retained its third position globally for annual net forest-area gain, according to the UN FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment 2025.
