The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, through Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has inaugurated SEMICON India 2026, a three-day semiconductor conference held in New Delhi from 17 to 19 September 2026. The event marks India’s shift to what officials are calling Semicon 2.0, a new phase of the Indian semiconductor mission with expanded focus on chip design, manufacturing, packaging, research and skill development. The move signals India’s intention to build a complete semiconductor ecosystem domestically.
What the announcement contains
The government has increased the India Semiconductor Mission budget from USD 8 billion under the first phase to USD 13.5 billion for Semicon 2.0. The event, hosted at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, brings together over 600 exhibitors, including approximately 300 international companies, and representatives from 52 countries.
Several commercial production lines have begun operations:
- Micron Technology has started commercial DRAM and NAND production at Sanand, Gujarat
- CDIL Semiconductor in Mohali has inaugurated production for discrete devices
- Suchi Semicon in Surat has launched packaging operations
Semicon 2.0 is structured around six pillars: design, equipment and materials, manufacturing facilities, advanced packaging, applied research and development, and workforce talent development. Under the earlier phase, India trained 70,000 design engineers and deployed engineering design automation tools across more than 500 organisations.
Major global semiconductor companies have announced significant commitments. Applied Materials declared a USD 5 billion investment over ten years with tenfold expansion of its India supply chain by 2035. Lam Research committed approximately Rs 10,000 crore for its first silicon-component manufacturing and vertical ingot-processing facility in India. Tokyo Electron announced a semiconductor training centre in Gujarat to launch in 2027 as part of Japan-India cooperation. Tata Electronics is signing seven memoranda of understanding covering wafer manufacturing, advanced packaging, chemical supply and talent development.
