When a woman is pregnant and working, taking rest usually means losing income. PMMVY tries to make up part of that loss with a cash payment straight into the mother’s own bank account.
For a first child, you get Rs 5,000 in two parts. Rs 3,000 comes after you register the pregnancy and complete at least two antenatal check-ups within six months of your last period. Rs 2,000 follows after the birth is registered and the baby finishes the first immunisation cycle at 14 weeks.
For a second child, the benefit is paid only if the baby is a girl, and it is Rs 6,000 in one go. This is a deliberate nudge against the neglect of daughters.
The scheme is meant for women in households earning under Rs 8 lakh a year and for specific groups such as SC and ST women, women with disability, e-Shram and MGNREGA card holders, and Anganwadi and ASHA workers.
What you get
A cash incentive of Rs 5,000 for the first living child, paid in two instalments of Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000, and Rs 6,000 in a single instalment for the second child if that child is a girl. The money is paid by Direct Benefit Transfer into the mother's bank or post office account to make up for wage loss during pregnancy.
