Sukanya Samriddhi is a long term savings account meant to build a fund for a daughter’s education and marriage. Any parent or guardian can open one at a post office or an authorised bank for a girl who is under 10 years old. You need only Rs 250 to start and you can put in up to Rs 1,50,000 a year.
The attraction is the return. The account currently pays 8.2 percent a year, well above what a bank fixed deposit offers, and the interest is compounded annually. Better still, the whole thing is tax free at every stage. Your deposits reduce taxable income under Section 80C, and neither the interest nor the maturity amount is taxed.
You deposit for 15 years and the account matures 21 years after opening. Half the balance can be withdrawn for higher education once the girl turns 18, and the account can be closed early if she marries after 18.
