The Post Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Caste students is the largest scholarship programme the central government runs for SC learners. It picks up where school scholarships stop, covering study from class 11 right through to research degrees, so long as the course is pursued at a recognised institution inside India. The scheme pays two things. First, it reimburses the compulsory non refundable fees that the institution charges, which is often the bigger sum. Second, it pays an annual academic allowance meant for books, stationery and living costs, graded by how demanding the course is and by whether the student lives in a hostel.
Selection is handled by the state or union territory where the student is domiciled, not by the institution. Applications are filed on the National Scholarship Portal, verified by the institution and then by a state officer, and money reaches the student through direct benefit transfer into an Aadhaar linked bank account.
