Sediments from Bakhira Lake can help water resource management in the Central Ganga Plain

The Ministry of Science and Technology has announced findings from research on sediment layers at Bakhira Lake in Sant Kabir Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh. Scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, an institute under the Department of Science and Technology, studied magnetic minerals trapped in lake sediments to understand how climate has changed over the past 25,000 years. The research can help improve water management across the Central Ganga Plain, a region crucial for Indian agriculture.

What the study found

Researchers examined sediments from Bakhira Lake, one of Uttar Pradesh’s largest wetlands and a Ramsar Site since 2022. The lake sits in the Ghaghara-Rapti alluvial system and captures sediments from both the lake itself and surrounding areas, making it sensitive to changes in monsoon rainfall and weathering patterns.

The team used environmental magnetic properties along with grain-size analysis, geochemical records and clay mineral studies to trace Indian Summer Monsoon behaviour from the Last Glacial Maximum to the present day. Their reconstruction identified seven major climatic events over this period, including the Last Glacial Maximum (marked by cold, dry conditions), the Holocene Climatic Optimum (when wetter conditions brought more monsoon rainfall), and late Holocene droughts around 4,000 to 2,000 years ago. The dating was anchored using seven radiocarbon measurements.

The study shows how each of these climatic shifts influenced rainfall patterns, soil weathering, sediment movement and lake processes across northern India. The research was published in the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology.
