The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) has launched two new platforms to push electric vehicles into India’s trucking sector. Member Rajiv Gauba unveiled the Platform for Aggregating Clean Transport (PACT) and the Zero Emission Truck (ZET) Marketplace at the 5th E-Fast India Summit in September 2026. The move aims to shift India’s heavy freight transport away from diesel trucks towards electric alternatives.
What the new platforms will do
PACT and the ZET Marketplace are designed to address specific obstacles blocking the adoption of electric trucks in India. Currently, the heavy-duty trucking sector is fragmented among many small operators, making it hard for them to invest in expensive electric vehicles. Banks charge high interest rates for electric truck loans, and there is no coordinated planning for electric truck routes across the country.
The new platforms will work by pooling demand from multiple logistics companies, creating better financing options, and planning truck corridors systematically. This approach is meant to lower the cost of buying and operating electric trucks, bringing their price closer to diesel alternatives.
The context is stark: heavy trucks make up only 3 to 4 percent of India’s vehicle fleet but produce over one-third of transport emissions. In 2025, only about 800 heavy-duty electric trucks were sold in India. However, roads carry roughly 70 percent of the country’s freight, making the trucking sector critical to meeting India’s Net Zero target by 2070.
Gauba called for blended financing mechanisms, leasing models, and better data systems to make electric trucks more affordable for operators.
