S&T based community initiative improves detection and control of TB in Rajasthan

The Ministry of Science and Technology has backed a community-led initiative in Rajasthan that has significantly improved how tuberculosis is detected and managed in remote tribal areas. The effort combines scientific research with grassroots participation to tackle TB in regions where the disease remains a serious public health challenge.

The initiative was carried out by AIIMS Jodhpur with support from the SEED division of the Department of Science and Technology. It focused on six districts in southern Rajasthan: Sirohi, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Dungarpur, Pratapgarh and Banswara.

What the programme involved

Researchers surveyed more than 6000 people across the six districts to understand TB prevalence, including both active and latent infections, as well as drug resistance patterns. The work included household surveys, symptom screening, sputum testing and confirmatory diagnostics following national TB elimination programme standards.

The team held awareness workshops and partnered with local healthcare workers and panchayat representatives to identify people showing TB symptoms. Those who tested positive were started on treatment according to national guidelines. The initiative also focused on screening household contacts of TB patients for preventive therapy to reduce transmission within families and communities.

The approach aimed to address longstanding barriers to TB control in these areas, including difficult terrain, limited health awareness, social stigma attached to the disease, seasonal migration patterns and delays in diagnosis that have historically complicated TB management efforts.
